Getting ready, heading to the airport, having the briefing, security checks, boarding, sometimes delays, then the actual flight. Often I would operate on a 16 hour flight. Working long hoursĭespite everyone thinking you’re on a permanent holiday (because well, that’s how it looks on your Instagram account), you can work some really long days sometimes. You may have 3 or 4 days off in a row but often you’re so tired and exhausted to make use of your discounted staff travel flights that you just want to stay at home and catch up with sleep. A few times after really long flights I was literally knocked out for 18 hours! That’s not normal. This inconsistency and lack of regular sleep is not good for you and in the long-term it is bad for your health and can even lead to diabetes. Often you are desperately trying to catch a few hours sleep in the middle of the day before your next flight, or you’re trying to sleep all day after a night flight but you still feeling terrible when you wake up. Probably the most obvious downside to being a Flight Attendant is experiencing jet lag on a regular basis and having inconsistent sleep patterns. Cons of being a Flight Attendant: Jet lag and lack of sleep I’ve seen The Pyramids from up above, the glistening white sands of Zanzibar, the Northern Lights, the most incredible sunsets you can imagine, and also the scariest lightning and thunderstorms.īut of course, like any job, there are downsides. The views you’ll see up in the sky beats any office view. You will also make some amazing flight attendant friends! Not many people understand this lifestyle, so having these friends who have the same lifestyle as you is so important! This certainly keeps things interesting! Every day is different and you are far from bored in this job! Plus once you are on the layover you are free to do as you wish! You can hang out with the crew, go shopping, relax by the pool or go sightseeing alone – it’s up to you! Meeting new peopleīeing a flight attendant is perfect for those who love meeting people as you meet so many new people in this job every day! Your passengers, the crew and the local people you meet on your layovers! They will often have very different cultures and backgrounds to you and will tell you some fascinating stories about their countries. You can be on a tropical island one day and then a few days later in one of the world’s best cities! Not only are your destinations different every month, but you often work with different people on every flight too. No two days are ever the same as a flight attendant. Those were just some of the incredible moments I got to experience on my layovers. Seeing in the New Year at the Sydney fireworks, going on incredible safaris in Africa, experiencing Mardi Gras in New Orleans, cycling across the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco on my birthday, being in Kyoto for the sakura season, partying in Las Vegas. You will honestly have some of the most amazing experiences of your life as a flight attendant. Your family can also get cheap flights too! My parents used my staff travel benefits so many times! And I was so happy I was able to make this possible for them.
So if the hotel is in a great location it is so awesome! Reduced price airline ticketsĪnother great perk is that you get cheap (or sometimes free!) airline tickets to use during your vacation time and days off! Often you’ll get discounts not just off the airline you fly for, but for other airlines too! I got to visit so many incredible places in my spare time as the heavily discounted flight prices meant I could afford to take several trips every year! Your airline also pays for your hotel room (they choose the hotel). Obviously this is the best part! This job gives you the opportunity to travel to new and exciting destinations and get paid for doing so! Not only that but most airlines also pay you some money for the downtime you have on your layover! So whilst you’re sipping on that cocktail in The Seychelles or shopping in Tokyo, you’re getting paid (albeit a small amount but still!). Being an international Flight Attendant is definitely one of the best jobs in the world, there’s no doubt about it! That isn’t to say that there aren’t some negatives to the job. If I had a £ for each time someone had told me “you have the best job in the world” I would be a mighty rich woman by now.
